The Fairy GOLDmother Wins Weiss-Bertoni Award

December 31, 2025

Our most prestigious award, the Weiss-Bertoni Trophy, is given in memory of Larry Weiss and Bob Bertoni, to honor not only winning, but both extraordinary presence at the bridge table and service to New England bridge – particularly in promoting face-to-face bridge at all levels. The 2025 honoree is Susan Miguel.

For many years Sue has worked tirelessly to promote duplicate bridge in District 25 and Rhode Island. Sue owns the successful Viking Bridge Club in Portsmouth. When Covid stopped all face-to-face bridge, she was directing BBO games three times a day, 7 days per week to keep the game alive. In addition to all her responsibilities as President of District 25, which requires 50 hours of work each week, she was also the President of the RI Bridge Association, and she is its current treasurer.

Bridge is a family affair in Sue’s house. She met her husband Greg playing bridge and her son Johnathan who is well on his way to becoming a life master. She has been a director at our New England regionals for over 25 years and has become affectionately known as the Fairy GOLDmother for her focus on and dedication to new and advancing players. She also served as the I/N Chair at the 2022 NABC in Providence. Her nurturing demeanor has allowed her to shepherd nervous beginners into duplicate bridge.

Since becoming President of District 25 in 2024, Sue has worked to make District regionals fun and entertaining with cocktail parties, ice cream socials, theme nights and Pro-Am events. The BridgeFest and Bracketed Pairs events have become successful because of her tireless work promoting these events. Her work has not gone unnoticed and as Sue’s tenure as President of District 25 is ending, she will begin serving as the Region 2 Director on the ACBL Board.
