District 25
NEBridge - Documentation: Day 1 Bulletin

1. The people at BridgeFinesse do not post a bulletin for the first day of the tournament. Instead, they depend on us to send them an email with a pdf file attached. They store the pdf file on their server and send an email with a link to the file to all players who attended the previous year. Of course, they cannot do this if they do not have the email address.

2. Creating the file:

A. There are almost no rules for creating the file. Thus far, it has been about five or six 8 1/2 x 11 pages with 1/2" margins on all four sides. The layouts used to date follow this format:

1. Page 1 has the district's banner at the top. It should also probably have at least one photo and lots of welcoming text.

2. Page 2 has the schedule for the tournament. This comes from the lineup spreadsheet. Instructions for it are here. It is sometimes difficult to get it to fit in one page. Temporarily changing the font size from 12 to 11 might help.

3. The other pages have information designed to entice people to return to the tournament. Looking at bulletins from previous tournaments might help. Unlike the printed bulletin this will only be viewed online. Therefore, color and excitement are at a premium.

4. Links can be shown, but they will not be active when the file is posted on the BridgeFinesse server (or wherever they end up). Therefore,

a) Text such as "You can read about team games here" should be replaced with "You can read about team games at https://nebridge.org/pages/149/". The reader can thereby copy the link iand paste it nto the browser.

b) If links are automatically created when text is entered, they should be removed.

c) This also applies to email links.

B. Many software programs can be used. The best are ones that allow for easy control of columns, tables, and pagination.

C. When the document is finished, create a pdf of it. This should be done at least ten days before the start of the tournament. The pdf file should be sent to as many people as possible for proofreading. There can never be too much proofreading.

3. The final pdf should be sent to Kimberly at help@thecommongame.com during the week before the tournament or earlier.
